What if self-sabotage wasn’t sabotage at all?
What if instead it was soothing, survival or a strategy to keep you safe?

The body and I’m talking specifically here about the autonomic (think automatic – like breathing) nervous system and its only purpose and role is to keep you alive and safe. It doesn’t care that you want to lose 20lbs, it doesn’t care that you want to grow your business, it does not care that you want to build your confidence and put yourself out there – it cares about what it feels is safe.
Safety to the body is homeostasis or what is predictable, known and normal. Not the lock your doors wear a seatbelt kind of safety.
So, when we try to change, we go against what is known and what is normal, and this is where sabotaging behaviours tend to show up.
These behaviours show up because at some point they kept us safe, were soothing, were a coping mechanism or survival strategy. For example, you’re on a diet but keep emotionally eating or you’re focused on business growth but keep procrastinating – at some point these techniques allowed you NOT to feel at all – to numb, relax or disconnect or because you were chasing a feeling outside of you that you don’t know how / can’t feel inside of you.
Switching behaviours (food for drink, procrastination for obsessive working and a mix and match) is common too – because it’s not about the substance or habit – it’s about the emotion and unconscious pattern that’s driving it. This is why willpower and abstinence are not the solution to self-sabotage. Healing is.
Healing the root cause of why we needed the / a coping mechanism or survival strategy in the first place. Healing so that the nervous system can handle the tough times and the good times by releasing and feeling all the unprocessed experiences and unfelt emotions that we have suppressed or distracted ourselves from. Healing so that we can layer by layer re-define who we want to be, re-build or beliefs and feel safe inside without the need to self soothe or ‘sabotage’.
