Lucy’s Monthly Blog | Goal Setting in September

This might be backwards from a usual life coach kinda blog so bear with me …

The temptation to set massive goals for September is programmed into us from our own school days, compounded if you’re a parent. Relax all summer and come September boom it’s back to it.

The tendency to then set enormous goals for ourselves for September to achieve by Christmas becomes almost automatic …

Here’s the problem: you’re the same person you were in June and July and August. So, what will be different in September?

The answer is nothing. Nothing will be different. You might have a little more time, but nothing about September is going to change you just like a Monday isn’t a different day to Sunday.

So, when setting big goals for yourself in September whether it’s fat loss or to get healthy, or to finally scale your business I’d ask you to sit for a second and really dial into that truth and accept that setting and achieving goals is going to take more than just ‘I’ll start in September’.

As a life and mindset coach these are the 4 steps I would be focused on to achieve your goals, in any area of life!

Step 1 – Know what you want

Get clear – is it vague like I want to be slimmer or specific like a certain outfit? Is it a size or scale of business or is it feeling you get to feel daily?

Step 2 – Know why you want it

Why is it that you want it? Are you ‘shoulding’ yourself (aka shaming yourself)? Are you doing because it’s the right thing to do or the next thing to do? Or do you really desire it?

Step 3 – Who do you need to be to have / keep the goal?

Rather than focusing on just the actions and using willpower (it doesn’t exist btw) and discipline focus on becoming the type of person who lives that way, who has what you want. What do they think, feel and know? What would it be like if you already achieved your goal – how would it feel?
